The Shasta County Department of Public Works recently completed a vital bridge deck replacement on Coleman Fish Hatchery Road at Unnamed Creek Bridge. The bridge, which was previously failing and reduced to a single lane, serves as the only road in and out of the Coleman National Fish Hatchery. This repair was crucial to ensuring safe and reliable access, especially given the frequent heavy water trucks used for fish planting operations.

Shasta County Public Works is pleased to announce the completion of a critical infrastructure project on Shelly Lane in Anderson, CA. The bridge over the local drainage system, which had suffered partial washout due to severe weather, has now been fully repaired. This project involved the replacement of damaged culverts and the successful relocation of a PG&E gas line to ensure the work could be completed efficiently.

Sean Ewing, PE, CBO, has been selected as the new Director of Resource Management. Ewing has been offered and accepted the position, with the official appointment by the Board of Supervisors scheduled for October 15, 2024. He brings a wealth of experience in civil engineering, public service, and management, having most recently served as the Building Division Manager and Building Official for Shasta County. His appointment follows the departure of former Director Paul Hellman, who left the position in September of this year. 

Troy Payne has been appointed as the new Veterans Services Officer for Shasta County!

A Shasta County native, Troy has deep roots in the community, having been raised in Redding and Anderson. After graduating from Anderson High School in 1988, he joined the U.S. Army, where he served as a Military Police Officer with postings in Texas, Germany, and Georgia. He was honorably discharged in 1995 and returned home to pursue studies in Administration of Justice at Shasta College.

The Women, Infants & Children (WIC) program is turning 50 years old!

“WIC is thrilled to celebrate its 50th anniversary, marking decades of dedication to providing essential nutrition assistance, health information and breastfeeding support to the families we serve,” said Kristi Richey, of Shasta County WIC.

Shasta County is proud to announce that Craig Isberg, Maintenance Supervisor in the Public Works - Roads Department, has been named Employee of the Month for September 2024. Craig’s long-standing commitment to excellence, leadership, and dedication to his work has earned him this distinguished recognition.

In a 3-2 vote, the Shasta County Board of Supervisors have appointed Wyatt Paxton as the Interim Director of Resource Management, effective September 16, 2024, with Supervisors Crye, Jones, and Kelstrom voting “Yes” and Supervisors Garman and Rickert voting “No”. This appointment comes as the County continues a thorough recruitment process to select a permanent Director of Resource Management, which began on August 19, 2024.

Shasta County is pleased to recognize Grant Lopus, Community Service Officer III of the Sheriff's Department, as the Employee of the Month for August 2024. Grant has been a dedicated member of the Sheriff's Department since February 2008, specializing in Abandoned Vehicle Abatement. His patient, polite, and professional approach, particularly when dealing with frustrated citizens, has made him a valuable asset to the department and the community.

Shasta County Department of Child Support Services is excited to announce their annual Backpack and School Supply Drive! They are accepting donations of new backpacks and school supplies Now through July 31st, 2024, for the 8th Annual Drive-Thru Backpack Giveaway.

Last year you helped us distribute 530 backpacks filled with supplies. Our goal this year is to distribute at least of 600 backpacks filled with essential school supplies to Shasta County students for the upcoming academic year.

Your assistance in sharing this initiative is invaluable in achieving this goal.

Tim Lewis, IT Application Support Analyst I, has been named the July '24 Employee of the Month! 

During the July 2, 2024 meeting of the Shasta County Board of Supervisors, the Board Appointed Thomas Toller as the new Shasta County Clerk/Registrar of Voters (ROV) in a 3-2 vote.

The selection of Toller for this position came following two days of public interviews and the appointment was made after the completed background check. The newly selected Toller will now serve the remainder of the current term ending January 3, 2027. 

On Thursday, June 27, 2024, the Exchange Club of Redding hosted their 51st annual Peace Officer of the Year Ceremony where the Sahstsa Community had the privilege of honoring our best and brightest officers from across Shasta County! Honorees were recognized during a lunchtime ceremony at Win-River Casino and Resort Center.

Congratulations to all of our Peace Officers of the Year and thank you for your dedication and excellence in keeping our community safe.

2023 Peace Officers of the Year:

The Board Supervisors unanimously voted Tuesday not to put a 1% sales tax increase on the November ballot to help fund the expansion and operation of the jail in downtown Redding.

The Board expressed reluctance to propose a tax increase, citing doubts about public support. This skepticism is grounded in the failure of Measure A in March 2020, where a proposed 1% public safety sales tax increase for jail expansion was rejected by 51.5% of voters. 

Dr. John Mahoney, Clinical Psychologist III with HHSA, has been selected as the Employee of the Month for June 2024.

The BOS voted 5-0 to approve a $100,000 contribution towards securing an eastbound flight from Redding Regional Airport,

Shasta County proudly announces the instalment of a Veterans Memorial Display at the Shasta County Administration Building, located at 1450 Court Street, Redding, CA. The display, curated by the Shasta County Veterans Services Office (VSO), pays tribute to Shasta County residents who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. 

In Tuesday's meeting of the  Board of Supervisors, they addressed proposed changes to their compensation and travel expenses. Following a presentation by Monica Fugitt, the Director of Support Services, the Board voted 3-1 to approve the first reading of the proposed ordinance, with Supervisor Crye being the sole vote against the increase in pay, and Supervisor Rickert not in attendance to vote.

It is with great esteem that we recognize Kathryn Cooper as the Shasta County Employee of the Month for April 2024!

As the HHSA Program Manager within the Health and Human Services Agency, Kathryn adeptly navigates the dynamic environment of state requirements and client needs. Her strategic oversight of the Customer Service Center (CSC) has yielded commendable results, with a consistent 90% positive customer satisfaction rating.

Household leaks waste nearly 1 trillion gallons of water nationwide every year, enough to provide water to over 11 million homes. During Fix a Leak Week (March 18 to March 24), the Department of Water Resources (DWR) encourages everyone to find and fix leaks inside and outside their home to save water. 

One of the Leak-Fixing projects DWR is helping to fund to address aging water infrastructures is right here in Shasta County!

Shasta Dam has opened its top level water release outflows for the first time since 2017. 

With the recent increase in rainfall, Shasta is currently at 87% capacity.  Releases are made according to U.S. Army Corp of Engineers(USACE) Sacramento flood control rules. 

On Thursday, releases from Keswick Dam into the Sacramento River increased from 25K cubic feet per second (cfs) to 30K cfs, and will soon increase to 35K cfs.

Some much-needed enhancements are coming to our beloved Burney Falls. Starting April 2024, the falls will be temporarily closed for the spring and summer seasons to embark on some essential trail reconstruction efforts.

Shasta County successfully transferred all required Homeless Housing, Assistance, and Prevention (HHAP) funds to the City of Redding.

In a 3-2 vote the Board of Supervisors decided to suspend impact fees established under Ordinance 665 for new development in the unincorporated areas of Shasta County.

Redding Area Bus Authority to Provide Free Rides for Veterans on Fixed Routes and Demand Response Services

Beginning Tuesday, January 2, 2024, any veteran can ride free on the Redding Area Bus Authority’s fixed route and Demand Response services throughout Shasta County.

The Accountability, Transparency, Housing, Outreach, Mitigation, Economic Opportunity (AT HOME) Plan is designed to be a collaborative effort which recognizes that local officials understand local challenges and are best equipped to develop local solutions that work for their residents. The AT HOME Plan allows for the development of a collaborative local plan to address homelessness in Shasta County.

Shasta County, CA – The Shasta County Board of Supervisors (BOS) have voted in favor of placing a Charter County proposal on the ballots for public consideration during the upcoming March 5, 2024 primary election. The vote occurred during the November 7, 2023 Board meeting, following its initial introduction and approval by the BOS during the October 31, 2023 meeting.

Nicole Foote, Assistant Social Worker, has been named the Shasta County Employee of the Month for October 2023!

Nicole is a trustworthy employee who provides ethical and robust services to the population. She quickly builds rapport with high risk and high need clients within the drug court program. Nicole has been witnessed connecting with people during Addicted Offender Program (AOP) evaluation interviews in the jail and speaking to those clients with dignity and respect. Clients have reported how much they appreciate having her as their case worker.

October 7th, 2023 has been proclaimed "Global War on Terrorism and Desert Storm Veterans Appreciation Day"!

Operation Desert Storm began January 17, 1991, after Saddam Hussein and Iraqi forces invaded neighboring Kuwait and refused to withdraw. The conflict is now commonly known as the Gulf War. From start to finish, Desert Storm only lasted 43 days, from January 17 to February 28, 1991. In fact, the land campaign is infamously known as the "100-hour ground war".

The Shasta County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed October 2023 as Global Youth Justice Month in Shasta County!

Throughout October more than 2,000 youth court programs operating in our nation’s juvenile justice systems, schools, and community-based organizations will celebrate Global Youth Justice Month. Peer courts are youth-led and volunteer-driven diversion programs, and the Shasta County Youth Peer Court has been in operation for nineteen years. 

The Board of Supervisors has adopted a resolution which expresses their opposition to any overreaching government mandate related to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) or other health pandemics which impact individual liberties, particularly as they may relate to each person’s right to make their own health-related decisions. 

September 17, 2023, marks the 236th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of the United States of America at the Constitutional Convention, providing a historic opportunity for all Americans to remember the achievements of our Founding Fathers.

The Board of Supervisors have proclaimed the week of September 17-23, 2023, as Constitution Week in Shasta County and encourage all citizens to recognize and appreciate the importance of this enduring document to our nation.  Reaffirming our commitment to the rights and responsibilities of citizenship in this great nation.

To enhance public trust and the transparency of future elections, the Board of Supervisors has adopted a resolution to establish a "Citizens Election Advisory Committee".

Government Code section 25201, states, “Subject to the provisions of the Elections Code, the board may establish, abolish, and change election precincts, appoint inspectors, clerks, and judges of election, canvass all election returns, declare the result, and order the county elections official to issue certificates of election.”

The Day Reporting Center (DRC) offers a variety of services to help individuals successfully re-enter society after serving time in jail or prison. These services encourage positive change in overall behavior to reduce recidivism and give participants renewed vision for their future.

RABA bus transportation is now FREE throughout all of Shasta County for the Summer! The Redding Area Bus Authority is launching a fare-free summer in an effort to restore lost ridership from the COVID-19 pandemic and reintroduce area residents and visitors to public transportation.

RABA began the Fare Free service starting on Saturday, July 1, 2023 and will continue to provide free rides on RABA through Saturday, September 30, 2023.

As in years past, the California Department of Child Support Services has announced August as Child Support Awareness Month statewide. 

The Shasta County Department of Child Support Services, being the county agency charged with the administration of the child support program in Shasta County, and in further pursuit of seeking new and innovative ways of enforcing orders for support, strongly believes that the children in Shasta County deserve the financial, health care, and emotional support of both parents.

Shasta County is pleased to announce the appointment of Monica Fugitt as the new Director of Support Services. With over 12 years of dedicated service to Shasta County, Monica brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in personnel, purchasing, and risk management to her new role.

We are thrilled to announce the appointment of David J. Rickert as the new Shasta County Executive Officer/Clerk of the Board. Mr. Rickert commenced his tenure on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, bringing with him an impressive background and a wealth of experience in county administration. His arrival marks an exciting new chapter for Shasta County.

The FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has delivered preliminary flood maps for unincorporated Shasta County and the City of Redding. The maps identify revised flood hazards along the Stillwater Creek and its tributaries down to the confluence of the Sacramento River. The new maps will help building officials, contractors and homeowners make effective mitigation decisions, thereby contributing to safer and more disaster resilient communities.

Shasta County recently received almost $35 million in funds from the American Rescue Plan to help the community recover from the effects of the pandemic. The County's Board of Supervisors recently approved a plan to spend this money, which included a $300,000 sub-award to the City of Redding.

The City of Redding is currently working on a program to develop micro shelter communities. These communities will provide housing for people in need, and the $300,000 sub-award will be used to provide supportive services to the people living in these communities.

The Anderson-Cottonwood Irrigation District (ACID) held a presentation at the April 25, 2023 Shasta County Board of Supervisors meeting to discuss the start of irrigation for the water year 2023. The ACID announced that they would be starting irrigation that afternoon, and the valves have been open at churn creek bottom since last week's First Annual ACID Landowner and Water User appreciation Luncheon held at the diversion dam in Redding.

In Tuesday’s evening meeting the Board of Supervisors took time to address homelessness in Shasta County. 

In an effort to reopen the third floor of the Jail, which was closed on July 28, 2022, the Board of Supervisors approved the addition of 6.0 Full Time Equivalent Public Safety Service Officers (PSSOs) to the Jail budget, as requested by the sheriff’s office.

Shasta County recently  gathered local County, City, Tribal, and nonprofit partners to meet with Graham Knaus, CEO of the California State Association of Counties (CSAC), to discuss a new plan to address homelessness called "AT HOME."  The plan was developed as an all-county effort to analyze barriers to addressing homelessness and developing solutions, tailored to the unique needs of our communities.

Shasta County has named March 29th, 2023 "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day".

This day marks a significant milestone in our nation's history, honoring the bravery and sacrifice of the men and women who served in the Vietnam War.

The Board approved making an agreement with DLR Group for planning, architectural and engineering services for the “Jail Inmate Transportation & Courtroom Repurposing Project and Strategic Facilities Plan for Inmate Housing”.

The Board of Supervisors recognized Kristin Gulling-Smith, Agency Staff Services Analyst I for Clerk of the Board as the March ‘23 Employee of the Month.

The Shasta County Board of Supervisors proclaimed that March is ACEs, Resilience and Hope Awareness Month. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and trauma are among the nation’s biggest public health issues.

The The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to close the Opportunity Center (OC) with a soft closing date set for June 30th. 

The Board of Supervisors agreed to revisit discussions in regards to adopting a resolution to the Second Amendment at a later date, to be determined.  After much discussion durring the February 21, 2023 meeting, the board remained split on which version of the resolution to adopt. Supervisor Crye proposed the Board take more time to examine the full implications of each resolution before making a decision.

Shasta County is seeking design services for Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Prototype Plans. Accepted plans will be used as Pre-Approved ADU plans, offered at no or little cost to homeowners and contractors for expedited permitting.

We are accepting proposals for one-bedroom units no larger than 850-square-feet as well as two-bedroom units no larger than 1,000-square-feet.

Her passion and drive to help families is what makes her an excellent public servant. She models poise and positivity in the face of challenges, and elevates those around her by doing so.

New Board of Supervisors Members Sworn in to Office and to begin new terms on Jan 3, 2023

The Board of Supervisors voted in favor of integrating and consolidating administration of Veteran Services into the County Administrative Office (CAO). This transition will allow VSO employees to direct more of their time and attention toward providing services to veterans and their families, while the CAO provides administrative and fiscal support.

Kelly Gannon, Assessor-Record Real Property Appraiser II, has been named Shasta County December Employee of the Month!

The Board of Supervisors held a special meeting in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s surprise decision on November 4, to withhold $1 billion in statewide homelessness program funding, pending that local agencies sign a guidance letter, no later than November 29, 2022, committing to more ambitious action to address homelessness.

Al Cathey is Shasta County's newly appointed Public Works Director.
