New Public Works Director Appointed

Yesterday, the Shasta County Board of Supervisors appointed Al Cathey to the position of Public Works Director. The appointment followed an open recruitment and a public hearing. Mr. Cathey holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and brings over 30 years of engineering experience in the public sector.
Prior to joining the County, Mr. Cathey worked as an Engineer for the City of San Jose and the County of Humboldt. He was then hired by Shasta County as an Associate Engineer, subsequently promoted to a Supervising Engineer, and most recently assumed the role of Deputy Director of Public Works – Engineering in 2019. He has served as Acting Public Works Director since June 2022.
After a nationwide search, Mr. Cathey’s qualifications and experience rose to the top. His appointment was unanimously approved by the Board of Supervisors. He will assume his new position on August 28, 2022.
Shasta County Public Works oversees a wide range of services, including County roads and bridges, County facilities and grounds, 9 active County Service Areas, the County’s Solid Waste Program, and the Fall River Mills Airport. The Public Works Director also serves as the County Surveyor, Road Commissioner and Chief Engineer of the Shasta County Water Agency.
