Shasta County Elder Abuse Awareness poster

June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month

The National Center on Elder Abuse reports that an estimated 1 in 10 adults aged 65 or older will experience some kind of mistreatment, and that 3.5% are taken advantage of financially. Because many older adults rely on others for their care, abuse is consistently under-reported. Sometimes, the perpetrator is a family member.

Our oldest adults are especially vulnerable to feelings of isolation, hopelessness and thoughts of suicide. It's up to us to recognize the signs of abuse.
