Affordable health care is essential to health and well-being. Options for health care coverage are available, depending on your individual situation.

Medi-Cal

Medi-Cal is California’s version of the federal Medicaid health coverage program. Medi-Cal provides health care coverage to California residents with low income.

Who can get Medi-Cal?

  • Children under age 21
  • Low-income families with children
  • Individuals ages 65 or older
  • Disabled or blind individuals
  • Individuals receiving nursing home care
  • Pregnant people
  • Low-income adults, ages 21–64, without children

What does Medi-Cal cover?

A detailed list of covered services is available on the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) website.

How to apply for Medi-Cal

  • Online through BenefitsCal or Covered California
    • If your income is higher than Medi-Cal allows, health insurance plans are available through Covered California. If you apply through the Covered California website, your application will be evaluated for both Medi-Cal and Covered California plans.
  • By phone: Call 877-652-0731 to complete and electronically sign the Medi-Cal application
  • By mail: Call 877-652-0731 to request an application be mailed to you. Or, print an online application, fill out and mail to:
         Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency, P.O. Box 496005, Redding CA 96049-6005  
  • In person, by visiting one of our local county offices

Once approved, Medi-Cal benefits are managed under Partnership Health Plan of California. Each Medi-Cal member will receive a Partnership ID card, an introduction letter and a Member Handbook.

County Medical Insurance Program (CMSP)

CMSP provides health coverage for Shasta County residents, ages 21 through 64, with incomes below established limits and who are not eligible to Medi-Cal benefits.

What does CMSP cover?

How to apply for CMSP

All individuals must first apply for Medi-Cal.  If determined ineligible for Medi-Cal, an application for CMSP will be provided by mail with instructions on how to apply.

 

Medi-Cal Access Program (MCAP)

MCAP provides pregnant individuals with health care coverage, at no cost to the individuals. Newborns may also be covered under the Medi-Cal Access Infant Program (MCAIP).

Community Health Advocates (CHAs) are available to help! 

If you are having difficulty with paperwork or need help applying for services, CHAs are available in all our offices. They can help with CalFresh and Medi-Cal applications and identify community resources to assist with utilities, housing, transportation, etc.
