Shasta County's rising Fentanyl problem in light of International Fentanyl Awareness Day

Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency said In one year, opioid overdose incidents increased by 125%. Fentanyl overdose deaths increased by 500%.

REDDING. Calif. — May 9 represents International Fentanyl Awareness Day, a growing crisis that is seen all over the country and especially in California.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), from 1999 to 2020 there were over 60,000 synthetic opioids, primarily fentanyl, related overdose deaths in the country.

Shasta Substance Use Coalition released 2022 data that showed Shasta County's growing opioid issue. From 2019 to 2021 drug-involved overdose deaths with Fentanyl rose to 40 people in Shasta County.

According to Shasta Use Coalition 2022 report, from 2019 to 2020 opioid overdose incidents increased by 37%, from 2020 to 2021 opioid overdose incidents increased by 125%.

Those in the 25-34 age group had the highest amount of opioid overdose incidents every year.

There were 53 Fentanyl deaths in Shasta County from 2019 to 2021, as well as 42 other opioid deaths including other small overdose deaths located within Shasta County.

There were a small number of overdose deaths located outside of the scope of this map but were still within Shasta County.
