SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. — Shasta Regional Transportation Agency is bringing back the Shasta Bike Challenge for 2023 with the goal of encouraging more people to try biking throughout the month of May and reap the benefits of this healthy and eco-friendly activity.

The challenge runs from May 1-31 and is open to anyone aged 13 or older who lives or works in Shasta County.

Participants can learn how to register for the challenge here, or go on the Love to Ride platform, where participants will be entered into free drawings for great prizes each time they ride their bike and log their rides to work, for errands, exercise, or wherever they want to ride.

During the month of May, event organizers say all levels of riders are welcome, and participants can register as an individual and/or join their workplace team or create a team of friends, family, neighbors, etc. for the local challenge. The platform can be used for free year-round to track lifetime statistics, but the workplace stats start over in May to keep track of competition rankings.

What makes this year special, organizers say, is the special category dedicated to workplaces and groups. Workplaces have one mission, the organizers said; "to get more co-workers riding and smiling."

Workplaces will compete against those of similar size, with more staff riding during May increasing the workplace's ranking on the leaderboard. Workplaces will compete in seven size categories, from 1-6 staff to 2,000+ staff. The workplace with at least 20% participation by the end of May will be in the drawing to win an exclusive Shasta Bike Month & Challenge bike rack to place at their workplace or organization of choice.

But if you don’t have a workplace, participants can also form a group of any size and compete against other groups in Shasta County, and even nationally.

The group with the most miles in each size category (1-10 riders, 11-20 riders, 21-30 riders, and 31+ riders) will win a $100 gift card to Fratelli’s Pizza Parlor to celebrate with their team.

Organizers say individuals are always competing, and participants can see where they stack up against other riders in Shasta County throughout the entire month on the individuals' leaderboard. They say the more trips taken during the month of May, the more entries for prizes both nationally and locally.

Along with winning prizes, the Shasta Bike Challenge organizers reiterate that biking has numerous benefits, including building fitness, improving mental health, improving sleep, saving money, and protecting the planet.

The Shasta Bike Month is a collaborative effort of various organizations, clubs, and volunteers who want to celebrate bicycling and encourage more people to bicycle more often throughout Shasta County. The Shasta Bike Challenge is free and open to all levels of riders. Participants can register for the challenge and find more information on the Love to Ride website.
