Firewood How To Protect Yourself When Buying Firewood

What is a Cord?

Bulk firewood is sold by a measurement called a "cord." A cord must equal 128 cubic feet. To be sure you have a cord, stack the wood neatly by placing the wood in a line or a row, with individual pieces touching and parallel to each other, making sure that the wood is compact and has as few gaps as possible. Then measure the stack. If the width times the height times the length equals 128 cubic feet, you have a cord of firewood.

Measuring Devices

The Measuring Devices Program assures accuracy of commercial transactions based on quantities by spot inspections of establishments involved in bulk sales, by test purchases of commodities, and through investigations of complaints.

Package Inspection

Most transactions involving the exchange of goods involve some form of weighing and measuring. The Shasta County Quantity Control program provides regular, systematic inspection of packaged commodities for correct quantity and labeling.

Price Verification

The Shasta County Department of Weights and Measures is mandated by state law to protect the interests of the buyer and seller in order to eliminate unfair business practices, unfair competition, and assure the integrity of everyday business transactions.

Retail Motor Fuel

Shasta County Weights and Measures Inspectors increase consumer confidence when purchasing petroleum and automotive products by enforcing quality, uniformity, quantity, advertising and labeling laws within the State.

Gasoline, diesel fuel and brake fluid are consistently monitored to ensure quality. Products are removed from the marketplace and appropriate enforcement action is taken when substandard products are found.

Service Agent

The Registered Service Agency program is responsible for registering service agencies and their employees who, for hire or payment of any kind, repair commercial weighing and measuring devices.

Service Agents have the authority to place a correct and type-approved device “in-service” for commercial use, pending reinspection by a Weights and Measures Official.

Weighing Devices

The Shasta County Weighing Devices Program assures the suitability and accuracy of commercial weighing devices used in transactions based on weight. All weighing and measuring devices used for "point of sale" transactions are required to be type approved for use in California, registered annually with the County, and tested regularly to guarantee they are performing within State tolerances.

Weighmaster

A "Weighmaster" is a person licensed by the California Division of Measurements Standards (DMS) to certify the weighed, measured, or counted quantity of any bulk commodity. Weighmasters issue certificates documenting the quantity that is used as the basis of a sale. The certificates issued by weighmasters are recognized by courts of law as legal documents, and there are criteria that must be followed by weighmasters when issuing them.
