Shasta County Proposes Culturally Respectful Road Name Replacements
On October 29, 2024, the Shasta County Board of Supervisors held a public hearing to discuss and receive feedback on proposed replacement names for four roads within Shasta County. Following the hearing, the Board adopted resolutions to select the proposed names for transmittal to the California Advisory Committee on Geographic Names (CAGN), in accordance with California State Assembly Bill (AB) 2022. The bill found the term “Squaw” (Sq_”) to be “a racist and derogatory term”, requiring that it be removed from all geographic features and place names in the state of California and be replaced with new names.
The proposed new road names include:
- Bama’du Drive as the replacement name for "Sq_ Carpet Drive and Emergency Fire Escape Road"
- Blue Grass Trail as the replacement name for "Sq_ Grass Trail"
- K’etewala Trail as the replacement name for "Sq_ Springs Trail"
- Chali mem paniik Road as the replacement name for "Sq_ Valley Loop Road"
These new road names will now be reviewed by the CAGN for final approval, aligning with state and local efforts to update geographic names and better reflect the region’s heritage and values.
The Board’s decision is an important step in embracing inclusivity and cultural respect within Shasta County. By adopting these proposed replacement names, the County honors local Indigenous communities, acknowledges the historical significance of the area, and ensures that road names align with contemporary values and state mandates. This effort fosters a deeper connection to the land and its history while promoting unity and understanding within the community.
Shasta County remains committed to working with residents and stakeholders to create a welcoming and respectful environment for all, while recognizing the diverse cultural backgrounds that contribute to the County’s rich heritage.
