Shasta County Hosts NorCal Veterans Collaborative Meeting

Date: 7/26/22

Today, Shasta County hosted members of the California Department of Veterans Affairs Executive Team and regional veterans services providers from twelve area counties at a Rural Northern California Veterans Collaborative Meeting.  This was the first step in a new effort by CalVet focused on reaching veteran populations north of Sacramento.

At the meeting, veterans service providers, community partners, and veterans service offices from the North State came together to begin building a stronger network to enhance services available to veterans in rural areas.  The meeting was called by the CalVet Minority and Underrepresented Veterans Division and was hosted by the Shasta County Veterans Services Office.

“Today’s event was the first step in connecting with California Department of Veterans Affairs and serving the Northern Rural counties more effectively than has been done in the past,” said Troy Payne, Shasta County Acting Veterans Services Officer.  “We’ve never had this type of interaction at a State level before and this was the perfect event to launch this effort.”

Shasta County is home to over 15,000 veterans.  According to CalVet, veterans residing in rural counties face disproportionate barriers to accessing resources based on geographic location.  The Rural Northern California Veterans Collaborative will seek to address gaps in services and improve outreach in remote areas.
