Below you can find pertinent information for Shasta County property owners:

All requests for change of mailing address must be made in writing, and include the signature of one of the property owners of record. Please include the Assessor Parcel Number for each property, as well as the complete new mailing address with your request.

Disaster Relief

Property which has sustained damage in an amount exceeding $10,000 may be eligible for a reduction in the assessed value of the property pursuant to Section 170, 172, and 172.1 of the California Revenue & Taxation Code and Division 3, Chapter 3.28, Section 3.28.010 of the Shasta County Ordinance.

Eminent Domain

State law provides that if a governmental agency acquires property through condemnation, owners may have the right to retain that property's existing assessed value by transferring it to a replacement property. A claim must be filed with the Assessor.

Exemptions

The law provides that certain property may be eligible for full or partial exemption from property tax. Those who may qualify include homeowners (owner-occupants), disabled veterans, churches, religious entities, and some charitable organizations.

Important Dates January 1

The assessment of property applies as of 12:01 a.m. on the first of January each year (lien date).

February 15

Legal deadline for filing exemption claims for Homeowners, Veterans, Disabled Veterans, Welfare, Cemetery, College, Church, Religious, and other miscellaneous exemptions.

April 1

Deadline for filing Business Personal Property statements.

April 10

Property tax due-second installment.

Prop 58/193 Parent/Child and Grandparent/Grandchild Exclusion

This law excludes transfers of real property between parents and children or grandparents to grandchildren* from reappraisal, and contains the following provisions:

Prop 60 Replacement Residence Exclusion

This law allows qualifying Shasta County residents, 55 years of age or older, or any severely and permanently disabled person, to acquire a replacement dwelling, and transfer the taxable value of their original (former) property to the replacement. General eligibility requirements are as follows:

Tax Assistance Programs Tax Assistance Programs for Senior Citizens and Blind/Disabled Persons Property Tax Postponement:

The State Controller’s Office (SCO) administers the Property Tax Postponement (PTP) Program, which allows eligible homeowners to postpone payment of current-year property taxes on their primary residence.

A postponement of property taxes is a deferment of current-year property taxes that must eventually be repaid. Repayment is secured by a lien against the property.

Tax Statement

It is the property owner's responsibility to obtain and pay their tax bill. Every effort is made to obtain proper mailing addresses; however, due to the increasingly large number of property transfers, it is possible that a new owner may not receive their statement if the property is acquired after July 1st. Nonreceipt of a tax statement does not relieve the imposition of penalties after the delinquent date.

The annual property tax statement is mailed by the Tax Collector on November 1st.
